Software and Systems Engineering

In this programme, you will learn how to leverage next-generation technologies such as Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, and Analytics to create, connect, optimize and engineer innovative systems moving to the pragmatic application and commercialization on a rapid and large scale.


The physical world and the virtual world (cyberspace) are converging into new generations of systems like the Cyber-Physical Systems. Such systems monitor physical environments, communicate and cooperate with each other and with human beings in real-time, and make decentralized intelligent decisions. They are highly dependent on components whose functionality is controlled by software.

With the revolution of Industry 4.0, manufactural production also begins to depend on these systems more and more. At the same time, companies and organizations still need IT to automatize their business processes and release human beings form the burden of repetitive and tedious operations.

Business software provides such support but requires a great knowledge of the operational environment in which it runs as it is developed to meet the needs of a specific business. Thus, designing and building software for such systems is an art that also requires skills in context analysis and customization.

Overall, there is an increasing need for a new generation of systems and software technologies that ensures robust, safe, secure, uninterrupted, and real-time operations - particularly in situations where human life or business is exposed to risk if software fails.

In this Master, you will learn how to conceive, design, implement, customize, and maintain these systems by applying engineering principle to the industry practice and develop and test your prototypes. Courses are designed to provide you with advanced engineering knowledge and practice of software and systems development complemented by competences in lean management and entrepreneurship.

The internship program will drive you through a unique experience and prepare to your thesis work that you can also perform in collaboration with international research centers like CSIRO Australia and companies associated to the program. The learning experience you get with this Master will give you a solid base for your future as software and systems-engineer.

Structure of the course

Students can choose between a local curriculum completely offered at unibz and an international curriculum coordinated by the faculties of Computer Science of unibz, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern (Germany), University of Oulu (Finland) and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain).

Exchange programmes and internships

Currently we offer exchange programmes with more than 20 partner universities all over the world and we are part of a large network of collaboration with employers in Italy and abroad where you can undertake an optional internship with a maximum of 300 hours.

Career Opportunities

Typical job profiles are:

  • Software Engineer for production lines: Graduates will be able to use basic theoretical concepts and specific advanced knowledge to plan and coordinate the development of systems for the manufacturing production (e.g. embedded systems) and smart environments (e.g., Cyber Physical Systems);
  • Software Engineer for business applications: Graduates will be able to build, customize and maintain software solutions for company businesses. They will be experts in how to gather business requirements, feedback from stakeholders, and new market solutions to influence support the automatization of the company’s business. Graduates will work with customers, partners and internal stakeholders of the business chain to educate and advocate innovative solutions, and to seek feedback and gather requirements to guide future development;
  • Applied researcher in public and private laboratories: Graduates will be able to start a career in research institutions with roles and functions of analysis, formalization, design and prototype development of software systems and innovative ICT technologies with particular attention to the quality of products, processes and software systems of any level of complexity and dimensions, in strategic sectors of industry and public administration.

In order to gain admission to the course, you will be required to prove that you already have a B2 level of competence in the English language. If you do not have an official language certification, you can take a language exam at our university.

  • Bachelor in Computer Science, Information Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics or or Industrial Engineering with general and disciplinary skills in computer science;
  • B2 level in English.
