What is it

People starting to play with the board game Commun-is
Players uses resources to complete their aims

This game is designed to discuss important topics and to improve the ability to think creatively about how to approach a problem. It is used to develop participatory processes, for the management of groups, in academic contexts, for communities and associations. We tried to create a product that could be a useful tool during meetings and discussions, to lead people to cooperate with each other in a constructive way, managing conflicts without frustrations or anger.

Structure of the game

People play during a match.
People play during a match.

The game needs 1 facilitator and from 4 to 6 players. The facilitator has to keep the order during the match and help players in taking decisions, and of course explaining rules. The facilitator tells a initial story with a problematic situation: then each player has to formulate a proposal with an idea for solve the problem. Each player has to perform a role, (such as INSTITUTION, ASSOCIATION) and has a prefixed number of resources that s/he can use for realizing the proposal. During the match players has to exchange resources among them for completing their proposal. How they can exchange these resources? By discussing each other, asking for alliances and connections. The match can be only won or lost all together: in order to win all players’ proposals must be connected each other with a shared resource. If they cannot connect each other, they will lose the match.

Game as a tool

The game stands as a method to learn to have an overview about the group dynamics. The game experience helps in learning and sharing experiences, increases the skills of the participants and provides an incentive to act in a community. Players become part of a participatory process in order to test decisions and imagine possible futures. It is a tool oriented to the community designed to be adapted to specific contexts to help different groups of people to recognize and apply a collaborative idea.
