The newly created Family Business Management Platform of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano aims to become an internationally renowned, research-led knowledge platform uniquely devoted to develop and disseminate new and meaningful knowledge on family businesses and business families in order to improve their management and performance.
It is based in the School of Economics and Management of the Free University of Bozen–Bolzano within the Cluster on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and has the ambition to become a reference point both locally and internationally for research, education and knowledge transfer activities in the field of family business. It builds on South Tyrol’s strong tradition of developing synergies between research and the entrepreneurial community and on close engagement with businesses and society that foster local and regional development.
The Family Business Management Platform conducts international, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research on the distinctive organizational goals, processes and outcomes engendered by family involvement in business.
As such, it develops and disseminates knowledge on family businesses and business families, on topics such as family-driven innovation and growth strategies, generational transitions and leadership succession, family-centered goals and goal setting processes, strategic management and internationalization of family firms, governance, entrepreneurial families and family entrepreneurial teams, alliances and relationship management, and sustainability and social issues in family enterprising.
The Family Business Management Platform combines academic research excellence and practical relevance with the ambition to become a natural partner for both international scholars and owners and managers of family businesses and business families, as well as for advisors and other actors interested in family enterprising. Moreover, the Platform will become a reference point for family business education at a variety of levels and will become a partner for policy makers interested in policy-making implications of family business research.
The Platform will produce substantial and impactful research publications in the field of family enterprise studies, host gatherings and symposia of family business scholars, family entrepreneurs and policy makers, contribute to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral education in the area of family business management, organize international workshops and conferences attracting the leading scholars in the field, exploit partnerships with other family business centers around the world, and ensure that the results of that research are made available to family business leaders and business families.
The vision of the Platform is to become a research hub for scholars, entrepreneurs, and students interested in family business from a wide range of perspectives, catalysing the critical human and intellectual resources that will be needed for its further evolution into a “pan-European” Competence Centre on Family Business of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano in the heart of Europe.
