This master is a highly specialized course aimed at improving the educational background of professionals in engineering and architecture who work in the field of energy efficiency and the environmental quality of buildings. The degree is the product of a joint initiative between the Faculty of Science and Technology and the CasaClima Agency of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
The Master provides specialized training in a field which has immense social impact, scientific and occupational relevance, an added value for the local community, and full transferability to other fields. The Master fosters professionals who are able to design, evaluate, manage and upgrade the energy and environmental systems of buildings, but who are also able to manage the day-to-day performance of such systems, from single-room environments to entire buildings within their urban context. Particular attention is reserved for the diagnosis, management and energy recovery of existing buildings and the design of buildings with very different intended uses.

The Master consists of 60 ECTS credits: 20 credits are provided through the online course BEE-Basic, which consists of five MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and 40 credits are provided in face-to-face courses. The MOOCs can be attended individually and independently of the Master. The relative ECTS credits can be recognized only if the students pass the final exam at unibz.
The contents of the Master’s course modules are divided into three main topic areas: BEE-In (Indoor environment for building occupants), BEE-Tech (Technologies) and BEE-Sustainable (Sustainable use of natural resources) and each area is divided into three teaching modules (Fundamental Modules – MF, Exercise Modules – ME, Application Modules – MA).
In order to earn the Master’s degree, students must complete a practicum in lieu of a tutored internship as a component of the dissertation or final exam. The practicum is conducted in collaboration with the "Agenzia CasaClima" and under the supervision of a designer or team of designers who are selected together with the Agency and who are currently engaged in a construction or renovation project. Students work with their peers and with the designers themselves to identify and analyse alternative/integrative improvements for the project through a process of technical and economic evaluation which aims to identify potential improvements o and to quantify their effectiveness.
