Bachelor in

Industrial and Mechanical Engineering

If you choose to study engineering at unibz, you can start your study career with the Bachelor in Industrial Mechanical Engineering. This study programme will provide you with wide knowledge and crucial skills in the field and its related areas.

Course description

This study programme is subdivided into four majors:

  • Mechanics;
  • Energetics;
  • Logistics and Production;
  • Automation.

The contents of the four majors have a strong common core and provide you with a comprehensive education in industrial mechanical engineering.

The major in Mechanics provides a further specialisation in the field of mechanical engineering. The major in Energetics focuses more on the study and design of energy systems, such as production and energy distribution as well as energy efficiency. These two majors guarantee optimal technical education and prepare students to gain admission to the Master in Industrial Mechanical Engineering or the Master in Energy Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering.

The major Logistics and Production especially deepens the knowledge in the field of industrial production and management. The major Automation focuses on topics of industrial automation.

Through a strong partnership with hi-tech industry, this major trains professionals in the 4.0 industry.

There are two study plan types for all four majors:

  • study plan for full-time students (3 years),
  • dual study plan (4 years).

The Dual Study Programme

These nationwide unique dual study programmes are offered in collaboration with Assoimprenditori Alto Adige, the association of the local entrepreneurs. Students have the opportunity to combine studies and work. In this case the duration of the programme is extended to four years. In the first year you study full time whereas starting with the second year you'll be alternating work and study. Students can sign an employment contract with a company already participating in the programme or with a new one at the end of the first year.

If you choose this programme you'll gain real work experience in a company that has agreed to invest in your training and that will allow you to obtain your degree while working. Learning by doing and projects combined with self-paced study and specific tutorship programmes (company tutors and university tutors) are the success key of this awarded study program. Next to the knowledge of the specific study programme, students acquire precious professional skills like team-working and problem solving.

Most of the students work in one of the six companies of the network Automotive Excellence Südtirol in South Tyrol. South Tyrol plays an important role in the international automotive sector: one in every three cars in Europe runs on technology from South Tyrol.

In the following years, you'll specialise in the fields of mechanics, energy or economics and management depending on the chosen study programme.

The majors in Mechanics, Energetics and Automation are propaedeutic studies, which means they prepare for the continuation of studies in a master's degree in the fields of energetics, mechanics and automation. The major logistics and production is more practically oriented with contents in the fields of production, management and economy.

Thanks to the trilingualism and the international composition of the academic staff, the Bachelor in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering has given me a sound education with a strong application orientation. In the Major in Logistics and Production Engineering, I had to face very different challenges and business experiences. In the dual study programme I was able to gain concrete work experience immediately, which significantly accelerated my career.

Selena Milanovic

Siemens Consulting, Munich

Graduating in industrial and mechanical engineering from unibz, I got the proper background to specialise in biomedical engineering and eventually undertake a PhD at the University of Oxford. In 2022, Forbes Italy selected me as a Top Talent Under 30 in the science category.
Undoubtedly, studying engineering in 3 languages opened up many  international opportunities for me.
