Two universities and two curricula, three languages, a precious asset to be preserved and transmitted.
This Master, the only one in Italy with a multilingual approach, trains you to become a specialist in the field of musical heritage and its cultural dissemination.
This inter-university MA, offered by the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and the University of Trento, allows you to specialize in two distinct fields:
The lecturers come from three different cultural and linguistic areas and will guide you along your academic path, introducing you to the world of education, research and transmission of knowledge in the field of music.

You will attend the first year of study, common to both curricula and mainly in English, at the Faculty of Education in Brixen-Bressanone. The main subjects are: musical education, music making and music learning, ethnomusicology, paleographie and musical philology and cultural anthropology.
The second year, you will have to decide whether to continue in Brixen-Bressanone, with a curriculum in Communicating Music (Musikvermittlung) that focuses on subjects such as history of theater and performing arts, exegesis of musical sources or pedagogy, or in Trento, with a curriculum in Philology of Music, focused on disciplines such as modern and contemporary composition stylistics, musical dramaturgy, history and criticism of art or codicology. A wide choice of optional couses will allow you to steer the path towards your interests.
Currently we offer exchange programmes with more than 30 partner universities all over the world and have an extensive network of internship cooperations in Italy and abroad (e.g. Orchestra Filarmonica di Bologna, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Bolzano International Piano Competition Busoni).
My name is Franka Luise Deister and I come from Germany. What I particularly like about the Master in Musicology is the internationality and interdisciplinarity of our study programme and the wonderful mentoring relationship with our teachers. Within the programme, we have created the Music Point, a series of meetings in which students and teachers share and experiment together practices of transferring knowledge and learning of music. This gives us a real chance to make music together and share our passion with others!
Graduates can work as experts in the field of music education and its cultural dissemination (for example in concert institutions and in teaching), or in archives and music libraries and in specialized publishing. You might also decide to continue your studies by undertaking a PhD.
To be admitted you must demonstrate a level of knowledge equal to C1 in the first language and B2 in the second. If you do not hold a recognised language certificate, you can take a language exam at unibz.
Graduates who have acquired at least 18 ECTS credits in the scientific-disciplinary fields L-ART/07 (Musicology and history of music) and L-ART/08 (Ethnomusicology), as well as bachelor graduates of the Conservatory (provided they have a secondary school diploma or other qualification obtained abroad and deemed suitable) may be admitted to the inter-university MA. In addition, holders of a foreign qualification recognised as suitable by the admission committee may be admitted.
Students who do not have the ECTS credits required for admission can acquire them free of charge at the University of Trento by taking single subject courses. If you are interested, please contact Marco Uvietta (email@example.com).
