Also on a regional level the 19th century can be illustrated as a "Laboratory of Modernity" (E. Frie), a concept which still shapes our understanding of Tyrol, "Tyrolicity" and "Trentinity".

The "Tyrol" of the 19th century can be described as a "multiple borderland", which was defined from changing outer and inner borders. It arised after 1800 as a completely new space of social and political interaction. This new "Tyrol" was generated by governmental policy, religious-ecclesiastical transformation, socio-economic change, cultural modernisation and communicative concentration.
